Banana Smoothies & More IBS Comfort Foods

Picture
Bananas are one of the friendliest, healthiest foods for IBS, and smoothies are a wonderfully healthy, easy and comforting way to drink your fruit as long as you don't use cow's milk.  A medium banana has only 100 calories, no fat and a significant amount of Vit. B-6, potassium, and magnesium,
Please see my nutrition information for important IBS foods, and more about the beautiful banana, on page 6.
For the smoothies, use lite soy milk, rice milk and juices (such as unsweetened apple, mango or papaya juices and nectars), or any of those in combination with the fruit - mango and papaya are very IBS friendly too. My personal favorite smoothie is a banana, fresh cut-up mango, apple juice and a little soy milk. Try using canned pumpkin in a vanilla-flavored soy milk smoothie with some pumpkin pie spices and sweetening of your choice for the holidays, and a soy milk smoothie with nutmeg, cinnamon and a brandy or rum non-alcoholic extract flavoring for Christmas "eggnog" the IBS way! Occasionally, I make a peach smoothie with strained organic baby peaches, or fresh/frozen raspberry smoothies (they are the only berries that their seeds don't bother me).  IBS-safe Baby Foods (such as banana, banana with oatmeal, sweet potato, and any foods on Heather's safe list of foods at her site (www.helpforibs.com) in general are very friendly to us.  Check out her Newsletter dated Feb. 9, 2010 for a list of Safe Snacks and a list of Safe Brand Name Foods.
HINT: When my tummy is being "delicate", I love the ORGANIC strained and junior-type baby vegetables, oatmeal, desserts, apple juice and fruits, often eating the safe ones on our list of safe foods, but including occasionally peaches and mixed fruits (no berries) in the winter.
